How We Apply the MOCHA Framework
through the S.O.W. Method™

Honoring the MOCHA Framework by The Management Center

At Safe Space Strategies, clarity is one of the highest forms of care especially in collaborative, purpose-driven work. That’s why we intentionally apply the MOCHA Framework, created and published by The Management Center, in many of our strategy and operations projects.

MOCHA (Manager, Owner, Consultant, Helper, and Approver) is a simple yet powerful tool for defining clear roles and responsibilities. It helps teams reduce confusion, uncover hidden labor, and make collaboration transparent and equitable.

We credit The Management Center for this framework and encourage anyone leading a team or partnership to explore their full training and resources on managing successful projects.

Why We Use MOCHA

Many of the organizations and entrepreneurs we support are deeply collaborative by design. Their work depends on coalitions, committees, volunteers, family partners, or multi-sector teams all trying to advance a shared vision.

Even the most passionate people can feel lost in translation without a clear map. MOCHA provides the structure, and the S.O.W. Method™ (our model for Strategy, Operations, and Wellbeing) provides the soil.

Together, they help our clients:

  • Clarify who is accountable for outcomes versus who is contributing input or support.

  • Prevent burnout and bottlenecks by balancing ownership and shared leadership.

  • Make invisible labor visible, especially across gendered and racialized lines.

  • Align operations with values of equity, transparency, and rest.

MOCHA + S.O.W. in Practice

When we apply the S.O.W. Method™, we often include a MOCHA mapping session.

  • Strategy: We identify what needs to grow; the vision, goals, and milestones.

  • Operations: We clarify who will water what assigning MOCHA roles so every seed, task, decision has clear ownership and flow.

  • Wellbeing: We ensure that collaboration stays sustainable where no one person carries more than their capacity, and recognition circulates freely.

MOCHA becomes a mirror for the health of the system. When every Manager, Owner, Consultant, Helper, and Approver knows their place in the process, the work moves forward with less friction and more grace.

Our Commitment to Proper Credit and Practice

Safe Space Strategies, LLC does not modify or claim authorship of the MOCHA framework. We reference it as a proven practice developed by The Management Center, whose mission to build more equitable and effective organizations deeply aligns with ours. â€‹We use MOCHA as one of several evidence-based tools to bring structure and transparency to complex, values-driven work.
