The Power of Routine: Why It Matters More Than You Think

The significance of our routines often goes unnoticed, but their impact is profound.

--------

Why do they matter so much? Some might say it's "because of slavery"... (a nod to “Black AF” and the humor that sustains us). While there's a hint of truth in every jest, the real reason is that our auto-pilot, our subconscious behavior, thrives on good direction.

This concept might remind some of AI and chatGPT experiences, and the age-old wisdom that "bad input generates bad output" holds true for both machines and humans. I dare add.. that "no input generates no output".

Let me explain...

As humans, living and interacting with others, we all face challenges. There are hard days, and then there are the really hard days.

On those hard days, even when motivation is lacking, our routines empower us to push forward. A positively-charged routine can be the difference between a day where you feel like you're merely trudging along and one where you feel accomplished, even if things didn't go perfectly.

On the really tough days, there might be times when you're just not up for anything. And that's okay. Everyone who's ever cared for someone else knows this feeling. It's tough. But if you talk to those who've been through it all, the seasoned veterans, you'll hear stories of gratitude for those who supported them when they couldn't stand on their own. Many will share their secret: "I learned to ask for help." And as they became adept at seeking assistance, their routines helped them identify their needs and articulate them to those eager to assist.

Moreover, routines carve out space in our lives. I recently asked a client what she felt she needed most at this moment. Her answer? Time.

So, here's my message of encouragement to you today. It starts with empathy and a reminder that everybody has "bad" days and sometimes it leaves us in spaces where it's hard to focus. Embracing the power of routine is not just about structure (and all the ways we try to avoid the "oppressions of structure"); it's about self-care, understanding, and making the most of every day. Honor yourself and your journey by 'reclaiming time' in advance. Set a routine, and watch the transformative power it brings to your life.
